San Diego, CA. - Family Pride Coalition, the national coalition of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered parenting organizations, recently received a $50,000 grant from the David Bohnett Foundation for general operating support. This gift is the largest contribution in the organization's history.

"The Bohnett Foundation has a strong commitment to LGBT parents and their children, recognizing the unique role of our community's families in the advancement of civil rights for our community. In the wake of unprecedented attacks on our families, I am proud to support Family Pride as they make this world a safer place for families in our community," said David Bohnett, founder of Geocities.

As GLBT parents and their families have become more visible, a tidal wave of state legislatures and agencies are attempting restrict legal protection for such families and prevent GLBT couples and individuals from adopting children. In addition, families are facing attacks against marriage and domestic partnerships, and are struggling with school safety issues.

Family Pride provides support through a coalition of 160 affiliated local parenting groups to face these battles. It provides training in advocacy, enabling parents and families to communicate effectively through the media, participate in public hearings, and meet with or write to legislators and other policymakers.

C. Ray Drew, Executive Director for Family Pride, states, "We are so pleased to receive this generous grant from the David Bohnett Foundation. As our families have become more visible, the demands on Family Pride are increasing exponentially and the legislative backlash on our families is at a critical point. The Bohnett Foundation grant will provide crucial support as we battle these right wing attacks on our families."

Drew continued, "David's gift to Family Pride is particularly meaningful because, as a non-parent, he understands the impact of these anti-gay adoption bills on the entire GLBT community.

The Family Pride Coalition, formed in 1979, was formerly known as Gay and Lesbian Parents Coalition International. Its mission is to advance the well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered parents and families through mutual support, community collaboration and public understanding. Family Pride offers national support groups, technical assistance to parenting groups, and public information on various parenting issues and numerous family events.
